Book Tag

JSD, Paschal, and Alt have all done this so I guess it's my turn. Most of my books are ones I just couldn't bear to part with.

How this tag works:

(a) Fiction book
(b) Autobiography
(c) Non-fiction book
(d) A fourth book of your choice, from any genre

Explain why the books are essential reads, in 30 words or less. (For maximum fun, try for 30 words exactly).

: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
If I hadn't read this I doubt I'd have read the trilogy. An easy stepping stone to the rich tome which some find daunting. LoTR is richer after reading this.

Autobiography: Hate to say it but, I've read biographies but no autobiographies that I can recall.

Non-fiction: In The Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick
Most history books are dry. This one isn't. It makes a connection between classic literature and fact. This award winner is now an American History classic. Info and 1st chapter are here.

Any book of your choosing: The Annotated Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, edited by William S. Baring-Gould
By the time I finished these two volumes I could guess the plot's finish. Pictures and notes in the margins make the stories richer and provide social context on Doyle's popularity.

As Paschal so neatly put it, Tag! You're it!

Update: Paschal suggested I break the rules and list a biography. Great idea! Thanks, Paschal! This turned me to the Public Library page for a search of topics. The related subjects clued me into a book I both like and am still in the process of reading. So here's my biography entry.

Biography: Sex With Kings : 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Rivalry, and Revenge by Eleanor Herman
Great behind the scenes stuff! What attracted me were mistresses' pictures and answering the question, "Why would someone want to be a mistress?" It has its own website, here.

Lee: Glad you had fun with this. Why not "break" the "rules" and name a biography you've liked: I suspect there are many.

Good idea, Paschal! I actually went through a bunch of the autobiographies on B&N to see if any names rang a bell. It's been years but I'll try to do the same for the biography idea.

Thanks! & Peace!

Love the post...and the music!

LOL Sandi you read and post as fast as you come up with words at Scrabble!

Thanks! I'm glad you like the tag and the book idea. I hope to read your tag soon.

Thanks for the games this morning!

Lee: In our conversation at church earlier, I had forgotten your Sex With Kings addition - a great addition at that. I thought we were talking about the Philbrick book (comes of trying to split one's attention between three people talking towards me at the same time; mea culpa).

One of my since-graduated seniors read SWK a couple of years ago; she still owes me a paper on the book: my end of the deal was letting her out of a more mundane assignment, so she could read the book and then write about it. One of those books I'd like to get around to eventually.

In the "I think this is relatively new" department: having your About Me info in the left margin seems a great design decision, one of those "why haven't we always done this?" kind of things.

No problem Paschal! I was kind of distracted myself. They are both good books. Hope you find time to read them. :) I can lend Philbrick but I'm still 2/3 way through the SWK.

Hope your student liked it and if owing you a paper at least had some good comments to say about it.

Thank you for noticing the profile move. When Fletch helped me set the new look up it was originally there. I played around with it and just recently decided I liked it better where you like it too. It made space for me to rearrange things a bit on the right side too. :) What I'd like to do next is create a slide show of the awards but am not quite sure how to go about that...learning in my future.

Lively post, Lee. Now I'm all curious about SEX WITH KINGS.

Thanks San! Hope you get a chance to read Sex With Kings and share your opinion with me. ;)

Hope you'll do this tag soon too!
